Tim Shanahan

Tim Shanahan (Chair, Board)

Experience: Tim is a Principal Adviser at the University of Western Australia, working in the areas of innovation and industry engagement. 

Previously, Tim was the founding Director of the Energy and Minerals Institute at UWA from 2008 – 2015.

From 1989 to 2000, Tim was the Executive Director of the Western Australian Municipal Association, the representative organisation of local government in Western Australia. From 2001 - 2007 Tim was the Chief Executive of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA. Tim is Deputy Chair of the Western Australian Regional Development Trust, and was previously Chair of the Pilbara Development Commission. Tim is also a Councillor and Honorary Life Member of the RAC WA and is its immediate past President. He was Deputy Chair of the Esperance Port Authority from 2009 until its amalgamation in 2014.

An Independent Director of WA Super since October 2004, Tim held the position of Chair of the Compliance and Risk Management Committee until his commencement as Chair of the Board, on July 1st 2014.

 

Jeffrey WilliamsJeffrey Williams

Experience: Jeff was President of the Australian Services Union Western Australia Branch from 2008 until retiring from that role in 2012.

Prior to this Jeff was a Branch Executive Councillor and on the Committee of Management for the Energy IT division. Jeff has previously worked as an Engineering Officer at Western Power and as a Technical Officer at Telstra for many years. Jeff has been involved in the union movement for the past 30 years and has experienced many changes to the superannuation system.

Jeffrey is the ASU nominated representative. Previous positions held include Trustee Director Westscheme Superannuation Fund, President of the Australian Services Union Western Australia Branch and Branch Executive Councillor on the Committee of Management for the ASU Energy IT division.

 

Jason BuckleyJason Buckley

Experience: Jason has worked within local government for 30 years. He commenced his career at Wanneroo, after which he was employed at Bayswater and Nedlands. Jason has been with the Town of Cambridge for the past 19 years and has been the Town's Chief Executive Officer since July 2006.

Prior to this role he was an executive responsible for corporate and community functions. Jason has a professional background in accounting and is a qualified CPA. Jason joined the Board in January 2006 as an Employer Representative.

Jason has been a Local Government Managers Association and Employer nominated representative since January 2006 serving on both the Compliance and Risk and Investment Committees.

Simon WithersSimon Withers

Experience: Simon is the former Mayor of the Town of Cambridge and the WA Local Government Association nominated representative. Simon worked in London for 18 years with an Investment Bank, where he became a Director of Corporate Finance, and subsequently as a partner in a corporate finance boutique, which he founded. 

 

Andrea BallantyneAndrea Ballantyne

Experience: Andrea has worked for the Local Government Union for the past 15 years as an Industrial Advocate, Treasurer and Assistant Secretary.

Andrea joined the board as an Alternative Director and later as a Director of the Trustee Board from 1998 - 2004. Andrea is nominated by the Local Government Racing & Cemeteries Employees Union.

 

Therese RyanTherese Ryan

Experience: Therese has extensive executive and board experience, including 5 years’ chairing a superannuation fund board.  She is currently a non executive director of Bapcor Limited, Victorian Managed Insurance Authority, VicForests, Gippsland Water, Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board and Good Shepherd Australia New Zealand.  She is also an independent member of the audit committee of the City of Melbourne.

 

Sharon HicksSharon Hicks

Experience: Sharon was previously Chief Investment Officer GESB and Co-Chief Investment Officer for NWQ Capital Management. She is a Certified Investment Management Analyst and currently sits on the investment committees of NWQ Capital Management, Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA and Lions Eye Institute.

 

David MoroneyDavid Moroney

Experience: David has over 20 years’ experience in senior finance roles and strong risk and governance skills. Previously a Trustee Director for the CBH Super Fund, David is currently an Independent Director of the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative, and Non-Executive Director of St Barbara Limited.

 

How are the directors elected?

The four Independent Directors are appointed by the Board.

The remaining four directors, while appointed by the Board, are nominated as follows:

  • One director is selected by the Board from people nominated by an ‘employer association’. This is the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) and Local Government Managers Australia (WA) (LGMA); 
  • One director is selected by the Board from people nominated by an ‘eligible employer’. This is an employer who has selected the Fund as the default fund; 
  • One director is nominated by the Australian Services Union (ASU); 
  • One director is nominated by the Western Australian Municipal, Road Boards, Parks and Racecourse Employees’ Union of Workers (LGRCEU).
